Security authorities in the Wamala Region have directed all petroleum dealers to immediately halt the sale of petrol and other flammable products to individuals using bottles, jerrycans and other suspicious containers, as the country nears polling day for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
The directive follows a threat assessment meeting that identified fuel and other flammable substances as potential risks to public safety amid heightened political tension in the region.
According to the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SSP Lameck Kigozi, the measure is intended to prevent the misuse of dangerous substances by ill-intentioned individuals.
“Dealers are advised to strictly dispense fuel directly into vehicles and motorcycles using appropriate means,” SSP Kigozi said.
He further warned motorists, riders and the general public against unsafe fuel handling practices, noting that security agencies will be monitoring compliance.
The directive also discourages the parking of fuel tankers at fuel stations during both day and night, citing security concerns.
“This is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding lives and property during this sensitive electoral period,” SSP Kigozi added.
Security agencies have urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers and report any suspicious activity as Uganda prepares to vote on January 15.
