NUP Doctor Injured in Fracas With Security in Sironko

Kampala, Uganda — A National Unity Platform (NUP) doctor was injured on Sunday after a confrontation with security forces along an opposition presidential campaign route in eastern Uganda, with police and the opposition offering starkly different accounts of how the incident unfolded.

NUP said its supporter, Dr. Hamza Lubulwa, was deliberately targeted by security personnel, alleging that officers attempted to intercept his vehicle before using force to extract occupants.

NUP fans claimed the NUP doctor was beaten and later shot at during the fracas, though they did not provide evidence to support the allegation.

Police denied that Lubulwa was shot, saying his injuries resulted from a struggle after he resisted arrest.

In a statement, the Uganda Police Force said the incident occurred on Jan. 4 in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council, Sironko District, during the NUP presidential candidate’s campaign trail.

According to police, Lubulwa was driving a Toyota Wish (registration UBM 430K) when he overtook the convoy at speed, ignored orders to stop and nearly collided with a security vehicle, prompting a pursuit and interception.

“On being stopped, he resisted lawful arrest and, in the ensuing scuffle, sustained a wound to the head,” said regional police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, adding that Lubulwa was taken to hospital.

“Allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence.”

NUP officials said the injury to its doctor highlights what it describes as escalating pressure on opposition supporters as campaigning intensifies.

Police, however, said officers acted to protect the convoy and maintain public safety.

The incident adds to a growing list of campaign-period confrontations that have drawn scrutiny in Uganda’s election season.
